Determining an IP address
You have bought a 1000 Mbps Internet package from Atlantek Broadband, you are satisfied with the speed and you want to know everything about the location inside the network. One important piece of information is its IP address, do you know how to check it?
How can I check the IP of my computer in Windows 10?
Method 1: Find the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar and right-click it.
Click Open Network and Internet Settings, then click Edit Connection Properties.
Look for the ipv4 address line and your IP address will appear there.
Method 2.1.
Click Windows menu > System > Command Prompt.
Add to the line: ipconfig,
and your IP address will appear in the ipv4 address line.
Method 3.1.
The next method is to activate the router interface. You will see the name and IP address of all devices connected to the network.
Method 4: The following method is valid for computers with Windows XP, 7, Vista and 8, as well as for computers with Windows 10.
Click on the magnifying glass in the Windows menu, type “Run” and press Enter.
A pop-up window appears, type ‘cmd’ and press Enter.
A command prompt appears, type ipconfig and press Enter to confirm.
Look for the IPv4 address line in the “-” section and your IP address will appear there.
Method five.
The last method is to use a suitable website: how do I check my IP number using a website, such as jakie-mam-ip.pl or pokapoka.pl, which will display the public IP of your computer? You don’t need to enter anything. When you enter the site, you will see a number that identifies your device on the network.
You may want to track someone’s IP and find out who is using it. How can I find out who owns the IP? It is true that there are sites that offer geolocation services (for example, kodit.pl), but you should not rely on them too much. Even if you know in which region the device with the IP you are looking for is located, there is no information about the exact owner of this IP. Moreover, this data is not accurate enough to draw conclusions about the identity of the owner of a particular IP number.
Why check the IP?
Knowledge of the IP address is useful, for example, for monitoring computers connected to the Internet.
It is also very useful if you want to set transmission speed limits for individual devices. It is also worth using this feature to ensure that you do not watch movies on your laptop or tablet when you should be studying. You can set transfer restrictions on your study computer so that you can browse the internet and search for documents, but not download or stream videos.
IP addresses are used to block access to certain sites on the terminal.
Public and local, dynamic and static IP addresses, what is the difference?
IP addresses can be divided into static and dynamic, local and public.
Static IP: means that the IP address remains unchanged even after the device is restarted.
Dynamic IP: means that the IP address changes every time you connect to the Internet or after a certain period of time (e.g. 24 hours).
Most Internet users now use dynamic IPs. It is quite rare that an ISP provides a fixed IP.
A local IP, also called a private IP, is an address assigned to users on a local area network (LAN). It is invisible to others and cannot join the network. These addresses are usually assigned by a DHCP server. Its notation is of the form 192.168.0.XXX. The first three characters identify the network you are connecting to, the next character identifies the device itself and the last character varies depending on whether it is a home or office network.
The public IP is visible to everyone. It allows your device to be connected and visible on any network. This IP address record is different from a local record. In many cases, this address can be found by typing “how to find your IP on the Internet” into a search engine.
It is important to be able to hide your IP address. Atlantek Broadband technicians can help you not only with installing a fibre broadband package but also with issues like internet security.
Why are you doing this? Providing your IP information to any website puts your online security and anonymity at risk. For example, did you know that airlines and travel agencies can change ticket prices based on your IP address? Some websites make their content available in different ways, depending on where you are. To circumvent regional restrictions, you can hide your IP address.
The easiest way to hide your IP address is to use a VPN or virtual private network – paid apps such as VPN Express are ideal for this. They offer the best encryption while maintaining fast transfer speeds. Some of these apps offer a 7 or 30-day free trial. However, you can also use free online VPN sites or VPN plugins, but these services are not as effective.
